Topic Description: I would like to know what has worked for auto sales consultants in regards to marketing outside the dealership. I am looking for ideas that work, ones that increase phone calls and on lot ups. Your comments will be appreciated in helping us all become top 10 percent sales consultants.

Here's what I have done in the past. I go to Kinko's and have a simple flyer copied. I distribute it to all the homes within a four square block area of my home every four or five months. It's always a nice little walk and my kids sometimes go with me to "help". You can't put them in their mailbox (mail carriers get pissed, it must be against the law or something) so we place them in the newspaper box or on their doors.

I use the same flyer for our neighborhood pinic (once a year)and for all the teams my kids are on. I have ocassionally passed these out to the small businesses close to my home but I still haven't got a response from those.

All of this is over and above the newsletters and usual follow up I do with my existing customer base.

I have done thousands of flyers, cold calls, community coupons, etc. with little or no results for the tiem spent. Something that I have found to be very effective is to keep a small disposable camera in my desk. I take each sold customers picture with their new car as they are about to drive away. I then develop the pictures and have double prints made. About a month later, (generally right before they get their survey) I send them a thankyou card (I will have already have made my follow up phone calls to thank them) and include the picture that I took the day they took their new car home. I follow this up in about a week with a phone call to ask if they got the picture I sent them. That is when I ask for a referal. I am starting to build up a nice customer base from this. When a referal comes into my office, the first thing they see is a bulletin board with pictures of my customers and their new cars on it. They always zone in on the picture of their friend who bought from me and it immediately puts them at ease.
