Many of my clients have had good results with introducing the manager early on, whenever it's most convenient, before the transaction stalls. And not to turn them necessarily, or even to use them for anything specific.
For instance, if the manager walks by, even at a far distance, just shout over to him, "Hey, Jim? Wave!"
Then say something like, "That's our sales manager, Jim. I just wanted you to see for yourself that he doesn't have horns, a tail, and carry a pitchfork. He's just like you and me and quite easy to work with. You'll see."
Another practice that many of my stores are employing now is having the sales desk within clear view, out on the showroom, or alternatively, have the managers regularly strolling outside of their office. This just makes it easier to intro them to clients.
